Florida-based Campers Inn’s most recent contribution was part a fundraising challenge made during the 2016 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo.  Campers Inn President and owner Jeff Hirsch matched contributions from RV Learning Center supporters up to $5,000.  The total raised from the challenge was $11,500, including the Campers Inn $5,000 contribution.

“We are committed to being a catalyst for increasing support for continuing education in the RV industry,” Hirsch said.  “The RV Learning Center is a source for professional development opportunities for dealership employees in all departments throughout the year.”

“As the RV Learning Center moves forward with updating its fixed operations curriculum in 2017 through its partnership with The Ohio State University, these contributions come at a particularly critical time,” said RV Learning Center Chairman Jeff Pastore of Hartville RV Center.  “Thanks to Campers Inn and all those who made new contributions to the Learning Center.”

Those that made pledges as part of the challenge were:  Lynn Butler, Setzer’s World of Camping; Mick Ferkey of Greeneway, Inc.; Chuck Jung of Colerain RV Center; and personal contributions from Bill Koster of Protective and Phil Ingrassia at RVDA.

Donations to the RV Learning Center fund programs including webinars on current topics, training and certification for dealership staff, essential publications and learning guides, and the Convention/Expo.  Convenient online donations as well as a printable form that accommodates customized pledges and donations have simplified giving.

ORIR Senior Public Lands Officials Discuss Improving Visitor Experiences (4/25/2017)
DOI Senior White House Advisor Doug Domenech outlined key goals and challenges, and emphasized the need to expand access on public lands and waters.

Senior Public Lands Officials Discuss Improving Outdoor Visitor Experiences with Recreation Industry Leaders

Senior officials from the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and U.S. Forest Service met with more than 30 representatives of the outdoor recreation industry at Shenandoah National Park on April 24th to discuss improving visitor experiences on America’s public lands and waters.

The meeting was hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR) at Skyland Resort – operated by National Park concessioner Delaware North.   RVDA and RVIA are members of ORIR and the meeting included Thor Industries President and CEO Bob Martin.

Outdoor recreation is big business, generating $646 billion in direct spending and supporting 6+ million jobs across all 50 states.  At Skyland Resort, ORIR members, key recreation company CEOs and senior administration officials discussed how improved infrastructure and increased opportunities for innovation and public-private partnerships will give more people the chance to enjoy healthy, active fun on their public lands and waters, while helping outdoor recreation continue to grow as a powerful and positive force in America.

DOI Senior White House Advisor Doug Domenech outlined key goals and challenges, and emphasized the need to expand access on public lands and waters, saying, “the Roosevelt Arch says ‘For the benefit and enjoyment of the people,’ and bringing people back to the equation is clearly an important issue.”

Meeting participants identified access as a crucial area where the private sector can help federal partners improve visitor experiences in the great outdoors.  They discussed the negative impact of access restrictions and the value of adopting practices to help enhance access to public lands and waters, including a “yes first” mentality, the streamlining of permitting processes, and closer management partnerships with state fish and wildlife agencies and the recreation industry.

Participants also discussed the importance of providing visitors with world-class experiences in these world-class places, and the role private industry can play in upgrading facilities, increasing connectivity, implementing electronic passes, modernizing campsites, and more.

Industry members offered their ideas on reducing the multi-billion-dollar maintenance backlog plaguing the public lands.  Suggestions included longer concessions contracts, extended service hours and seasons, restructured fee retention, reducing barriers to private investment, more efficient fee collection and a reassessment of backlog needs.

The recreation industry representatives emphasized their commitment to helping DOI overcome its current challenges.  Providing support for DOI funding in the FY2018 budget, encouraging a Recreation Title in upcoming infrastructure legislation and prioritizing the REC Act were just some of the ideas offered during the discussion. They also discussed how public-private partnerships can help promote awareness and support for America’s outdoors by capitalizing on industry efforts like Go RVing, Discover Boating and TakeMeFishing to spread the word about great opportunities on public lands and waters.  ORIR members noted that their trade shows -- the eight largest recreation trade shows in the country -- would provide a perfect opportunity to enhance communications between DOI and the nation’s recreation community.

Later in the day, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke provided an overview of his design for a major departmental reorganization, which he described as the “biggest in 100 years” and detailed as a reflection of the visions of John Muir and Gifford Pinchot.  The reorganization will unite all federal lands around key ecosystems.  And he told the group that the reorganization will reflect recreation’s large and growing role in public land and water management and substantially boost on-the-ground manpower.

During his discussions with the recreation leaders, Secretary Zinke expressed interest in the morning’s conversations and expressed strong support for public/private partnerships.  He told the group that the department now had more than 220 commissions and advisory bodies, but none provided broad support for partnerships.  He added examples of where he sought such counsel – telling the group that some parks were truly at carrying capacity until major changes occurred.  He cited Yosemite National Park, saying that current enjoyment of the park is limited by its auto-based transportation system, expressing hope for an innovative, “cool transportation alternative” and his plans to invite counsel for innovators like Elon Musk and then plan action under the umbrella of the infrastructure initiative.

On infrastructure, the recreation industry leaders and the Secretary were in complete agreement:  improved connectivity along roads and in developed parts of the public lands are vital for safety and enjoyment.  The Secretary and other meeting participants also found common ground on a goal of making visits to national parks and other public lands great experiences.

RVDA Seeks James B. Summers Award Nominees (4/14/2017)
Award will be presented at the RVDA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas during the RV Dealers International Convention/Expo.

RVDA Seeks James B. Summers Award Nominations

The RVDA Board of Directors created the James B. Summers (JBS) award in honor of past RVDA Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Summers, who was the first to receive it in 1986.  The JBS award is the association’s highest honor and recognizes individuals who make a consistent and outstanding contribution to RVDA and its members.  It’s that time of year, again, when the Board of Directors looks to you, the dealer and associate members of RVDA, to submit nominations for the 2017 JBS award.

The award’s namesake, Jim Summers, attended the convention almost every year after the award was established to present it to the next recipient.  He worked hard at delivering an introduction that would tease the audience through stories that could fit several individuals, eventually closing in on personal information that would identify the winner.  We lost Jim Summers to a battle with cancer on the eve of the 2010 convention. We will forever miss his quick wit and charming personality.

The actual award is a gold ring that has changed design over the years, but its value is ever increasing – not just because of the price of gold, but because of the finger it fits.  The value of the nominees and their work with and for your association is what makes this award so priceless.

Your nominee should have provided at least five years of service with and for RVDA, and given consistent and outstanding contributions to RVDA and its members.  One of the few restrictions states that the nominee may not be a current elected member of the RVDA Board of Directors.

To nominate an individual, please don’t just suggest the name; rather provide the name AND a narrative describing the contributions this person has made to the association.  Make a strong appeal telling us why you want your nominee to be selected.  Staff presents all nominations to the RVDA Board of Directors for consideration at their June meeting, and the candidate must be selected by a majority vote.

Please take a look at this list of the past winners.  I’m sure you’ll recognize several of the names, because many of them are still active participants in current RVDA boards, committees, and task forces.  They are still making consistent and outstanding contributions to RVDA on your behalf.

 AHCA Withdrawn - What's Next? (3/31/2017)
The withdrawal of the AHCA marks a crossroads with respect to the future of the ACA.

AHCA Withdrawn – What’s Next?

By Angie Weilage, Brown & Brown Insurance

On Friday, March 24, efforts by U.S. House Republicans to utilize the budget reconciliation process to repeal portions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) experienced a significant setback with the withdrawal of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) before a full vote. AHCA had been proceeding through the House legislative process and provided a strong indication of the policy direction Congressional Republicans favor on health care reform. The withdrawal of the AHCA marks a crossroads with respect to the future of the ACA.

Here’s what we currently know — and don’t know — about what could be next to help you stay informed.

ACA Remains the Law of the Land

The ACA remains the law of the land. Ongoing compliance with the law is required unless and until official guidance to the contrary is issued.

What’s Next for ACA Repeal and Replace?

The withdrawal of the AHCA signals a pause by Congressional Republicans in their repeal and replace effort without bipartisan support, but the debate about the future of the ACA is likely far from over. Now there are significant questions about what type of action, if any, Congress or the Administration will take to continue efforts to dismantle, replace or reform the ACA. Here are a few possibilities:

  • Regulatory Action for Market Stabilization and Regulatory Relief
Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price has authority to propose changes to current ACA regulations, which could be done to help stabilize the individual marketplace and/or provide regulatory relief “to the maximum extent permitted by law” as directed in the January 20 Executive Order.
  • Regulatory Non-Enforcement
Similar to directing agencies to offer regulatory relief, it is possible the Administration may adopt policies of non-enforcement of certain regulations, such as potentially directing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to not to enforce penalties related to specific ACA provisions.
  • Comprehensive Tax Reform
The Administration and House Republican Leadership have indicated that their next priority is tax reform. It’s possible that certain ACA taxes or penalties could be repealed or changed as part of Congressional efforts to rewrite the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Targeted Legislation
While the next steps for a new repeal and replace bill remain unclear, piecemeal legislation could be introduced on specific provisions, such as individual insurance market reforms. Bipartisan support will be required for this legislation to be successful in the Senate.
  • Increased State Autonomy
As part of the regulatory efforts, the Administration could defer decisions on certain health care reform provisions to the state level. Recently, Secretary Price invited governors to submit State Innovation Waivers (allowed under the ACA beginning in 2017), which would grant states more autonomy in making decisions about their health care structures.

Other Marketplace Issues to Watch
In addition to any potential changes to the public Marketplaces, there is current litigation about funding for cost-sharing subsidies for individuals covered through a Marketplace. Additionally, insurers will soon submit their plans regarding if and where they will participate in Marketplaces for 2018.

Angie Weilage manages the RVDA endorsed RV Dealers Health Collective Purchasing Arrangement for Brown & Brown Insurance.  The Health Collective Purchasing Arrangement offers members a new way to provide employee health benefits, while saving money.  Through a combination of leveraged buying power and program metrics that carve-out excess costs, RVDA members have an opportunity to lower health care premiums.  Dealers have the option of maintaining their current health benefits or they can further customize their offering to employees.  The program includes a dedicated Brown & Brown service representative, turn-key compliance solutions, and administrative support.  Click here for more information.

Chris Helder is Keynote Speaker at 2017 RV Dealers Association Convention/Expo (3/23/2017)
This powerful keynote address, made possible by convention Platinum Partner Wells Fargo CDF, will focus on communication techniques that can make an immediate impact and maximize the customer experience.

Chris Helder to Reveal ‘The Power of Influence’ During 2017
RV Dealers International Convention/Expo Keynote Presentation

(Fairfax, VA)   Noted author and speaker, Chris Helder, will present “The Power of Influence . . .  Mastering the Customer Experience,” during the opening general session of the RV Dealers International Convention/Expo on Tuesday, Nov. 7.   The convention is sponsored by RVDA – The National RV Dealers Association, RVDA of Canada, and the Mike Molino RV Learning Center.

This powerful keynote address, made possible by convention Platinum Partner Wells Fargo CDF, will focus on communication techniques that can make an immediate impact and maximize the customer experience. Chris has a fresh approach that concentrates on creating a strong connection with customers that can lead to better performance in all areas of the dealership.

The presentation will help dealers explore:

  • The greatest communication, persuasion, and influencing tools that are practical and can be implemented immediately
  • A list of "1%" behaviors that significantly improve your results
  • Persuasion skills, that you can increase, to get customers to take action
  • Building relationships that matter in business
  • Understanding the power of coding success and replicating winning behavior

As the author of two best-selling books on the power of genuine communication, Chris has addressed more than 2,000 audiences throughout the USA, Asia, Australia, and Europe. His global client list includes: Citibank, Merrill Lynch, Glaxo Smith Kline, Toyota, Fuji Xerox, Levi’s and IBM.

The convention theme is Gear Up for Success, and dealers are encouraged to bring their top performers for a week of fixed-operations training and education, leadership development, networking, and motivation that will take their performance to new heights.

Registration is now open and early bird rates apply through June 30, 2017. Dealers who register at least one person from their dealership by June 30 at the early bird rate of $609 lock in a rate of $589 for the rest of their company’s registrants—no matter when they sign up. That represents a 40 percent savings off the full convention rate for the first registrant alone.
Online registration is available at www.rvda.org.

Convention/Expo week starts with Vendor Training +Plus on Monday and Tuesday and includes a general session, educational and networking programs for young executives, Partners in Progress meetings, and track workshops designed to address the leading issues that drive every department in the dealership. In addition, the Society of Certified RV Professionals will head into its third year with another special event featuring recognitions, a guest speaker, and networking opportunities. Registrants can also attend a mini-rental school at no extra charge.

Relevant education tracks that address dealerships’ key areas offer a curriculum designed specifically for RV dealership employees. Education tracks for dealer/GMs, sales, service, parts, F&I, rental, and social media/eMarketing offer something to meet the professional development needs of most fixed-ops professionals.

There will also be an expo with more than 100 exhibitors that serve RV dealers by providing insurance products, finance tools, and training expertise, as well as the leading suppliers and manufacturers. These exhibitors can offer the dealer new ways to improve sales, management, customer service, and employee performance.

The convention venue is Bally’s, so the majority of events will take place in one area, increasing your chances of connecting with colleagues and staying on schedule. The centrally located dealer lounge, equipped with Wi-Fi and comfortable seating, is back this year. In addition, the RVDA block of hotel rooms at Bally’s and Paris offers convenient lodging and easy access to the nightlife along the Vegas Strip.
