Legislation Benefiting Outdoor Recreation Approved In Waning Days of 2016 (12/20/2016)
Rec Act and National Park Service Centennial Act Signed into Law

Legislation Benefiting Outdoor Recreation Approved in Waning Days of 2016
Rec Act and National Park Service Centennial Act Signed into Law

President Obama signed the Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact Act of 2016 into law this month.

Better known as the REC Act, it directs the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis to assess and analyze the U.S. outdoor recreation economy and its impact on the economy.

RVDA is one of a number of outdoor recreation industry associations to support the bill.

In April of 2016, the Secretary of the Interior enacted a temporary pilot program.  The REC Act will make sure the outdoor economy receives official government recognition for years to come.

In other news out of Washington, the president also signed the National Park Service Centennial Act, to help maintain the National Park System this month.

This act provides the Park Service with new tools and authorities it can use to maintain and improve the system.

The law will help reduce park service's deferred maintenance backlog by generating new revenue to fund needed capital improvements. Other provisions will help leverage private philanthropic donations, offer enhanced visitor services, and expand the Volunteers in Parks program.

The act is the byproduct of bipartisan efforts and diverse stakeholder input, including the American Recreation Coalition.

Aaron Sparks of Johnson RV Is 2017 Spader Scholarship Recipient

(Fairfax, VA) – Aaron Sparks, general manager at Johnson RV in Puyallup, WA, has been chosen as the 2017-2018 recipient of the Duane Spader Leadership Development Scholarship.  The scholarship, valued at nearly $15,000, will allow him to attend an 18-month Spader Leadership Development Program. The program is just one facet of the strategic alliance between Spader and the Mike Molino RV Learning Center.

The scholarship is named for Spader founder and former RVDA chairman, Duane Spader. Sparks started off in the RV business nearly three years ago as a sales person in Johnson RV’s Sandy, OR location and quickly became a top seller. From there he was open to relocating to work in different facilities to take on new challenges and help the company wherever needed. He became sales manager in the Puyallup store in February of this year before being promoted to general manager of that location over the summer.

“Aaron quickly learned our sales process and grew to our top salesperson month after month,” said Brandon Johnson, owner of Johnson RV. “He has grown tremendously as a leader, mentor, and in his inherent sales ability. He accepts any challenge with grace, including relocating to Colorado or Washington, if needed, to take on a Sales Manager role.”

Johnson said Sparks “continually educates himself each day through books, classes and in-person training. He consistently puts in long hours each day to ensure his staff and facility is performing.”

For information about the leadership development program, visit the program’s web page. Information about the Duane Spader Leadership Development Scholarship is available on this web page.
