At least 15 states, the District of Columbia, and 140+ local governments have laws expressly prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. A U.S. federal appeals court ruled recently that workplace discrimination protections already in place for sex and gender might also extend to transgender individuals. Likewise, the EEOC recently ruled that Title VII protects transgender individuals.
